What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractors specialise in the diagnosis, treatment and management of mechanical conditions of the joints and soft tissues. Emphasis is usually on the spine and the effects on the nervous system. A Chiropractic manipulation (adjustment) is a highly skilled technique, which gently releases stiffness. Pain often occurs when joints stop moving healthily. When a joint is treated and returns to normal healthy movement there is resolution of pain. Most treatments will include some soft tissue work to relax muscles and improve healing.
- Back and Neck: backache/pain, neck pain.
- Joints and Muscles: Joint pains (including hip/knee from osteoarthritis), muscle spasms, and cramp.
- Specific Injuries/Conditions: Sciatica, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), Shoulder/rotator cuff injuries, and ankle/plantar fasciitis.
- Head/Other: Headache (arising from the neck), migraine prevention
Aftercare and home advice are often given to maintain the positive effects of treatment and prevent reoccurrence.
-
- WHO Guideline (Dec 2023/Jan 2024): The World Health Organization released new guidelines for the non-surgical management of chronic primary low back pain, which includes conditional recommendations for spinal manipulative therapy (SMT).
- Systematic Review Updates (2024): A systematic review published in The Spine Journal (July 2025, search updated to March 2024) assessed high-quality guidelines, supporting the use of manual therapy, exercise, and education for back pain.
- NICE Guidelines (UK): The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines for low back pain and sciatica were updated in March 2021 and are still actively utilized, emphasizing manual therapy (including chiropractic) in combination with exercise.
- Best Practices (2022-2023): Updates to best practices for chiropractic management of adult patients were published in late 2022, focusing on evidence-based, conservative care.

What to Expect
Your initial visit to the clinic will begin by completing a short registration form. You will then be greeted in the waiting room by your practitioner. The consultation gives you the opportunity to bring us up to speed with your condition or concerns. We may ask questions about your previous health history or family history. This is not to be nosy but can help us to accurately diagnose and formulate the best plan of action for you. You will then be examined using specialised Orthopaedic and Neurological tests. Sometimes special tests like x-rays or MRI scans will be needed to fully assess you before diagnosis can be made. Once diagnosed, your practitioner will explain your condition and you will be invited to ask any questions that you may have. We will discuss your treatment options including the number of treatments required and techniques that can be used as well as things that you can do yourself to help with recovery. If Chiropractic treatment is not suitable for your condition, then you will be referred on in the right direction to get the help you need.
